To be built across a 26-acre (10.5 hectares) waterfront site on Johor Bay, the project’s gross development value is expected to reach 18 billion ringgit ($4.3 billion) when completed, the Singapore-listed hospital operator said in a statement late Monday. Construction of Thomson Hospital Iskandariah—a 500-bed hospital whose capacity can be doubled to 1,000 beds—and a 47-story upscale residential tower featuring 180 units dubbed villas in the sky will start next year under phase one of the project, which is expected to be completed within four years, the company said. Thomson Medical is proceeding with the project (which was first announced over a decade ago) as Singapore and Malaysia are pushing forward with the development of a special economic zone in Johor with a rapid train system slated to be completed by December next year. Check onze Discord   In Zuid-Korea bezitten inmiddels meer dan 10.000 mensen minstens 1 miljard won aan cryptovaluta (ongeveer $750.000). Volgens de Koreaanse toezichthouder ging het begin augustus 2025 om 10.800 personen. Deze groep heeft gemiddeld ruim 22 miljard won (≈€1,5 miljoen) per persoon aan crypto wat ongeveer 200 keer meer is dan de gemiddelde gebruiker in Zuid-Korea. Opvallend is dat jongere beleggers relatief zwaar investeren. Zuid-Koreanen in hun twintiger jaren vormen weliswaar de kleinste groep met 137 miljonairs, maar hebben gemiddeld de grootste portefeuilles. Dat crypto breed gedragen is in de samenleving blijkt ook uit het aantal actieve wallets. Bij de vijf grootste beurzen handelen 10,85 miljoen Zuid-Koreanen, bijna 20% van de bevolking. Daarmee staat het land wereldwijd in de voorhoede van adoptie, met zowel jonge als oudere generaties die crypto omarmen. Gevolgen voor financiële stabiliteit De sterke aanwezigheid van crypto roept vragen op over de stabiliteit van het financiële systeem. Crypto blijft namelijk enorm volatiel. Een koersdaling eind 2025 leidde tot een liquidatiegolf waarbij een beurs meer dan $1 miljard aan uitstaande leningen had waarvan een groot deel door de correctie werd geliquideerd. Dit bracht de toezichthouder ertoe alle nieuwe crypto leningen tijdelijk te verbieden en regels aan te scherpen. Daarnaast wijst de Bank of Korea op risico’s voor monetair beleid. Vooral stablecoins gekoppeld aan de Koreaanse won kunnen kapitaalstromen beïnvloeden en de effectiviteit van het beleid ondermijnen. Grote crypto posities raken daarmee niet langer alleen beleggers, maar ook de bredere economie. Bij forse verliezen kan dit consumptie, wisselkoersen en investeringsstromen beïnvloeden. Reactie en toekomstverwachting De overheid zit tussen stimuleren en reguleren in. President Lee Jae-myung ziet de cryptomarkt als nationaal project en overweegt bedrijven in deze sector zelfs als venture companies te erkennen, inclusief belastingvoordelen. Tegelijkertijd komen er duidelijke regels om misbruik en risico’s te voorkomen. Belastingmaatregelen zijn in voorbereiding: de invoering van een winstbelasting op crypto is uitgesteld tot 2027, maar komt er wel. Daarnaast beschermt sinds 2023 de Virtual Asset User Protection Act beleggers tegen oneerlijke handelspraktijken en misbruik van klantgelden. Zuid-Korea kent een enorm goeie adoptie van crypto, met een brede verspreiding onder miljoenen burgers en een opvallend grote groep miljonairs. Dat succes gaat hand in hand met streng toezicht. Voor crypto enthousiastelingen in Korea biedt dit kansen voor groei en innovatie, maar altijd onder het wakend oog van de toezichthouders die financiële stabiliteit vooropstellen.
