Chainlink (LINK) tokenomics

Chainlink's token economics, particularly under the Economics 2.0 framework, is designed to create a sustainable ecosystem by aligning the incentives of node operators, token holders, and data consumers. The native token, LINK, serves as the primary utility asset for securing oracle services and facilitating payments within the network.

Issuance and Allocation Mechanism

The LINK token was launched with a maximum supply of 1,000,000,000 (1 billion) tokens. The initial allocation was distributed to support the long-term development and operation of the decentralized oracle network.

The Public Token Sale occurred in September 2017 and raised approximately $32 million. The Node Operators & Ecosystem allocation is controlled by Chainlink Labs and is intended to incentivize and subsidize the operations of the network. The Company allocation is reserved for the ongoing development and maintenance of the protocol.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

The LINK token functions as a Medium of Exchange and a Staking Asset, driving the cryptoeconomic security of the network.

Network Utility

• Payment for Services: Users pay node operators in LINK to fulfill job requests, such as retrieving off-chain data or performing computations. Node operators can set their own pricing parameters for these jobs.
• Protocol Fees: LINK is used for transaction and verification fees across various Chainlink applications, including Data Streams, CCIP (Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol), and Chainlink Automation.

Staking and Security Incentives

Chainlink Staking (currently in version v0.2) allows participants to back the performance of oracle services.

• Community Stakers: Token holders can stake LINK to earn rewards. In v0.2, the community pool has a variable reward rate (approximately 4.32% as of May 2024).
• Node Operator Stakers: Nodes providing updates to specific feeds (like the ETH/USD price feed on Ethereum) must stake LINK. They earn a base floor reward rate of 4.50% plus a portion of delegated staking rewards.
• Alerting Rewards: Stakers can earn a reward of 7,000 LINK for successfully raising an alert if a supported data feed fails to update within a specified timeframe (e.g., three hours).
• Slashing: To ensure performance, node operators face a penalty of 700 LINK slashed from their staked deposits if they are at fault during an alerted event.

Ecosystem Programs

• Chainlink BUILD: Early-stage projects receive enhanced access to Chainlink services in exchange for committing a percentage of their own token supply to Chainlink service providers (stakers).
• Chainlink SCALE: Blockchain networks subsidize the operating costs of Chainlink nodes to accelerate the adoption of oracle services on their respective chains.

Locking and Unlocking Mechanism

Chainlink utilizes specific locking and unbonding mechanisms to ensure network stability and security.

Staking Locking and Withdrawal

In the Staking v0.2 platform, staked LINK is not permanently locked but is subject to an unbonding process to prevent sudden liquidity drains that could compromise security.

• Cooldown Period: Users must initiate a 28-day cooldown period before they can withdraw their staked LINK.
• Claim Window: Following the cooldown, there is a 7-day window during which the user can execute the withdrawal.
• Reward Ramping: Accrued rewards are subject to a 90-day ramping period. A user can withdraw 50% of their rewards after 45 days, with 100% becoming available only after the full 90 days.

Allocation Unlocks

The 350 million LINK allocated to Node Operators & Ecosystem was subject to a cliff that ended in Q4 2019. Since then, these tokens have been used periodically to subsidize node operations. While specific future unlock dates for the remaining non-circulating supply held by Chainlink Labs are not publicly disclosed in a fixed schedule, rewards for stakers and node operators are currently sourced from this non-circulating supply.

Pool Limits

As of May 2024, the Staking v0.2 pool is capped at 45,000,000 LINK.

• Community Allotment: ~40.88 million LINK.
• Node Operator Allotment: ~4.13 million LINK.
• Individual Limits: Community stakers can stake a minimum of 1 LINK and a maximum of 15,000 LINK per address. Node operators can stake between 1,000 and 75,000 LINK.
