The strongest Gate alternatives in 2026 are MEXC for entry-tier spot costs and listing speed, Binance for large-cap depth, Bitget and Bybit for copy trading, and Kraken or Coinbase for regulated access.
Gate itself is not in trouble, and on futures pricing and licensed entities it has gotten stronger, not weaker.

Key Takeaways
  • Gate.io charges 0.100% maker and 0.100% taker on spot at VIP 0, and its ladder does not reach a 0% maker rate until VIP 15.
  • MEXC publishes 0% maker and 0.050% taker on spot with no volume threshold and no token holding requirement.
  • On August 4, 2026, CoinGecko listed 1,551 coins on Gate.io's global platform and 5 on its US entity, so which Gate you get depends on your country.
  • Gate.io added four regulated entities between April 2025 and February 2026, covering Malta, Dubai, Japan and the United States.
  • A July 2026 dispute over one user's reported 1.7 million dollar account theft remains unresolved, and neither side's account has been verified by police.
  • Gate.io still wins on flat futures pricing, a 3 million dollar daily withdrawal limit at VIP 0, and the breadth of its licensed footprint.

Why Traders Look for Gate Alternatives in 2026

Most articles about leaving Gate are still arguing with a version of the exchange that no longer exists.
They lead with regulatory uncertainty, opacity and restricted-country creep, and several of them have not been meaningfully updated since early 2025.
The real reason people leave in 2026 is duller and more expensive: the entry tier.
Open a Gate account today without holding GateToken and you pay 0.100% on both sides of every spot trade.
That number is unremarkable by industry standards.
It stops being unremarkable once you notice how long the ladder is above it, and what other venues charge at their own starting line.

What Actually Changed at Gate in 2026

Getting this part right matters, because a comparison built on a stale premise is worth nothing.
Gate.io rebranded to Gate in 2025 and now operates through a set of separate regional entities rather than as a single offshore platform.
Gate Japan Co., Ltd. appears on Japan's Financial Services Agency register of licensed crypto-asset exchange service providers, in the edition dated June 30, 2026.
Gate US launched in August 2025 and offered spot trading in roughly 30 states by early 2026.
Its chief executive has publicly argued that MiCA only works if unlicensed platforms serving EU clients are held to the same bar, a position reported by CryptoBriefing in June 2026.
None of that is the profile of an exchange in retreat.

Which Gate Do You Actually Get?

The multi-entity structure is where the interesting problem starts.
The Gate that reviewers describe, with its long tail of altcoins and hundreds of perpetual pairs, is the global platform run from the Cayman Islands.
That is not necessarily the Gate available to you.
On the same day it recorded 5 coins and 5 trading pairs on Gate US.
That gap is not a criticism of Gate US, which is a young regulated venue doing what regulated venues do.
It is a warning about how you read exchange reviews.
A licence in Malta tells you very little about your recourse if your account sits under the Cayman Islands parent, and the asset list you saw in a review may not be the asset list you can trade.
Gate has no UK entity and no FCA registration, and the United Kingdom sits on its restricted list.

Gate Alternatives Compared

Six dimensions decide this choice, and the reason for choosing these six is that each one changes the answer for a specific kind of trader.
Spot and futures entry-tier fees matter because most people never leave the entry tier.
Native-token discounts matter because they are the hidden price of a headline rate.
Regulatory footprint decides whether you can open the account at all, and the last column is the honest answer to what each venue is actually for.

Data verified as of August 4, 2026 against each platform's official fee schedule, help centre and terms. Kraken's entry-tier spot band is reported as a range because its published schedule steps by 30-day volume. Listed-asset counts are handled in the text rather than in this table, because a same-day snapshot from one source is the only honest way to state them.

What Gate Costs at VIP 0, and What That Buys Elsewhere

Gate's fee page runs seventeen VIP tiers, and most retail accounts never leave the first one.
Reaching a higher tier takes 30-day volume, or an average GateToken holding, calculated through a formula that weights futures volume at 40%, options at 20% and CFD volume at 10%.
What the ladder does over its first nine steps is the part worth seeing.
From VIP 0 to VIP 9, the maker fee moves from 0.100% to 0.070%.
Nine tiers of climbing buys a 30% cut.
The 0% maker rate arrives at VIP 15, a tier that also carries a 40 million dollar daily withdrawal limit, which tells you what kind of account it is built for.
MEXC publishes 0% maker as its standard spot rate, with no volume threshold and no token requirement.
Its standard taker rate of 0.050% sits between Gate's VIP 10 and VIP 11 tiers, and the 0.040% rate available with a 20% MX deduction sits between VIP 11 and VIP 12.
That is the whole argument, and it is checkable on both fee pages in about two minutes.
Run it as money.
At 50,000 dollars of monthly spot volume, all market orders, a year on Gate's VIP 0 rate costs 600 dollars.
The same year on MEXC's standard taker rate costs 300 dollars, or 240 dollars with the MX deduction enabled.
At 500,000 dollars a month the gap widens to 6,000 dollars against 3,000 dollars, or 2,400 dollars.
If you work limit orders instead, the comparison stops being a percentage and becomes a category difference: Gate charges the same 0.100%, and MEXC charges nothing.
At 500,000 dollars a month, that is 6,000 dollars a year against zero.
Two limits belong on that calculation, and leaving them out would make it dishonest.
Gate users who clear its volume or GateToken thresholds genuinely do move down the ladder, so the 600 dollar figure describes the entry tier and not every Gate account.
MEXC's own fee page states that maker and taker rates may vary with platform events and user region, and its futures schedule is published as a range rather than a single number.
Neither of those caveats changes the direction of the comparison at the entry tier.
Both of them change how confidently you should quote a single number, which is why the figures above are stamped with the date they were pulled.
If you place limit orders, the difference between 0.100% and 0% is not a discount, it is your entire fee line.

The Other Alternatives, One by One

Binance

Binance consistently reports the largest spot trading volume among centralised venues, which matters more than headline fees once your order size starts moving the book.
Its ecosystem spans spot, futures, options and structured earn products under a single account.
The BNB fee discount takes an effective spot rate below Binance's headline 0.100%.
Against that, its EU availability depends on which group entity serves your country, its product range varies sharply by market, and its interface is genuinely hard for a first-time trader.

Bybit

Bybit's derivatives execution is the reason most of its users are there, and its copy trading product is mature rather than bolted on.
Its earn range and card product are stronger than the average offshore venue.
Its futures taker rate of 0.055% is marginally above the 0.05% that Binance, OKX and Gate all charge.
Bybit also exited Japan through 2026, and its spot listing breadth is narrower than Gate's.

OKX

OKX has the lowest headline spot maker fee among the venues that charge one, at 0.080%.
Its unified account lets one margin pool cover spot, futures and options, which is a real capital-efficiency gain for multi-product traders.
The built-in wallet and on-chain access are better integrated than most centralised competitors manage.
The learning curve is steep, and product availability again depends heavily on where you live.

Bitget

Copy trading is Bitget's headline product rather than a side feature, with a large pool of strategy providers and public performance data.
Its bot suite covers grid, DCA and futures strategies with a demo mode.
Its futures taker rate of 0.06% is the highest flat rate in this group.
Bitget announced its withdrawal from the Japanese market in August 2026, so Japanese readers should treat it as an exiting platform rather than an alternative.

KuCoin

KuCoin has listed small-cap projects early for years and retains a strong altcoin culture.
Its trading bot marketplace is well established.
KuCoin moved to full mandatory KYC in early 2026, which removed the low-friction onboarding that once distinguished it.
Liquidity on its thinner pairs is noticeably shallower than on Binance or Gate.

Kraken

Kraken is the answer for readers who need a licensed venue rather than the cheapest one.
It holds licences in the United States and across the EEA, supports fiat rails properly, and has a long record without a major breach.
Its entry-tier spot fees are the highest in this table, and its asset list is deliberately narrower.
For a trader chasing new listings, that narrowness is the entire problem.

Listing Speed, Measured

Listing speed is the one dimension where independent measurement exists, so it deserves numbers rather than adjectives.
For Pepe, Bonk, Fartcoin and dogwifhat, the ten venues averaged 129 days.
For TRUMP in January 2025, the same ten averaged four days, and eight of them were live within 48 hours.
Upbit, the last of the ten, did not list TRUMP until February 13, 2025.
TokenInsight's March 2025 analysis measured MEXC as the fastest of its tracked exchanges to list trending tokens.
Speed is a measure of how quickly a venue lists, not a judgment on what it lists.
Fast listing pipelines carry more low-quality and illiquid tokens, and that is true of every venue in the fast group, including both Gate and MEXC.

The July 2026 Account-Theft Dispute

A public dispute between Gate and one of its users has run since early July 2026, and it is unresolved.
A verified Gate user reported that roughly 1.7 million dollars was withdrawn from their account without authorisation.
The blockchain analytics firm Bitrace traced 49.96 ETH, 746,475 HSK and 1,565,982 USDT leaving the account, with security settings changed between July 4 and July 6 and withdrawals completed on July 7.
Gate's first public response denied any systemic breach or website security failure and pointed to identity checks that the withdrawal request had passed.
That response drew heavy criticism, and Gate then apologised, formed an internal team, and said it was helping the user pursue a freeze and recovery of the funds.
The user filed a criminal case on July 17, and by late July was accusing Gate of delaying the handover of evidence to police, which Gate denies.
Gate's account is that the user's identity data had been badly compromised outside the platform, that two of the user's payment accounts were also accessed in the same window, and that four days of notifications and withdrawal delays went unanswered.
The user's account is that no settings were changed by them and that a liveness check was passed by someone else.
Two things this does not establish.
It does not establish a platform breach, because neither side's version has been verified by police or an independent third party.
It also does not establish a solvency problem, even though DeFiLlama recorded around 207 million dollars of net outflows over seven days, because that metric can include ordinary transfers and internal wallet reorganisation.
The useful lesson is not about Gate specifically.
Account takeover through compromised external identity data is a risk on every centralised exchange, and no exchange, MEXC included, is a substitute for keeping long-term holdings in self-custody.

Where Gate Still Wins

Four things Gate does better than most of the platforms listed above.
Its futures pricing is flat and predictable at 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker from VIP 0, with no range and no regional asterisk, which is a genuine advantage over venues that publish bands.
Its VIP 0 withdrawal limit is 3 million dollars in 24 hours, which is generous for an unearned entry tier.
Its earn product line is unusually wide, covering flexible savings, dual investment, structured products, launchpool and on-chain staking under one account.
Its licensed footprint across Malta, Dubai, Japan and the United States is broader than most offshore competitors, MEXC included, and for readers who weight regulatory recourse heavily that is the deciding factor.

Our Take

The case for leaving Gate is narrower in 2026 than the internet suggests, and narrower is not the same as weaker.
If you hold GateToken, trade futures, or value having a licensed entity in your own country, Gate is a reasonable place to stay and we would not argue otherwise.
The reader who should move is specific: spot-focused, at or near the entry tier, not holding a native token, and trading often enough that 0.100% a side compounds into a number that matters.
For that reader, the maker rate alone decides it, because a 0% maker fee is not a promotional rate on MEXC but the published standard.
We would rather say that plainly and concede the four points above than pretend Gate is the platform its 2025 reviews describe.

How to Move Off Gate in Three Steps

Step 1. Open and verify the destination account first.
Complete identity verification before you move anything, because an unverified account can hold a deposit you cannot withdraw.
MEXC's verification tiers are covered in our guide to MEXC KYC requirements.
Step 2. Close positions and audit what you hold.
Exit open spot, margin and futures positions so nothing liquidates mid-transfer, and unlock any assets sitting in earn products.
Export your full trade history before you go, because you will want it at tax time and retrieving it later is harder.
Step 3. Test with a small transfer, then move the rest.
Send a small amount first and confirm it arrives before committing the balance.
Check three things on every withdrawal: the network matches on both sides, the memo or tag is included where the asset requires one, and the amount clears the destination's minimum deposit.
Choosing the wrong chain is the most common way people lose funds during an exchange move, and it is usually unrecoverable.
Our step-by-step withdrawal guide covers the same checks in the opposite direction.

Which Exchange Fits You

No platform wins every row, and three of the rows below point back at Gate.
Choose MEXC if you trade spot at the entry tier, do not hold a native exchange token, and want early access to new listings.
That is the case the numbers in this article actually support, and the maker rate is where you will see it first.
Stay on Gate if you trade futures at volume, already hold GateToken, or want a licensed entity in Malta, Dubai, Japan or the United States.
Choose Binance if your order sizes are large enough that book depth costs you more than fees do.
Choose Bitget or Bybit if copy trading or automated strategies are the core of how you trade.
Choose Kraken or Coinbase if regulated fiat access and legal recourse matter more than cost or asset breadth.
Readers comparing total cost across several venues can work through our crypto exchange fee comparison, and readers weighing platform security can start with our breakdown of MEXC's asset protection measures.

FAQ: Gate Alternatives

What is the best alternative to Gate?
It depends on why you are leaving.
MEXC is the strongest option for entry-tier spot costs and listing speed, while Binance leads on depth and Kraken on regulated access.

Is Gate shutting down or unsafe in 2026?
No.
Gate added MiCA, VARA and Japanese FSA licences through 2025 and 2026, though a July 2026 dispute over one user's reported 1.7 million dollar loss remains unresolved.

Is Gate.io the same as Gate.com?
Yes, Gate.io rebranded to Gate and now uses gate.com as its main domain.
The regional entities behind it, including Gate US and Gate Japan, are separate companies.

Which crypto exchange has lower fees than Gate?
MEXC publishes 0% maker and 0.050% taker on spot against Gate's 0.100% on both sides at VIP 0.
OKX is lower on the maker side at 0.080%, and both figures were checked on August 4, 2026.

Can US residents use Gate?
Not the global platform, which lists the United States as restricted.
US residents can use Gate US in supported states, though it listed only 5 coins on August 4, 2026 and offers no derivatives.

Does Gate list more coins than other exchanges?
Gate is one of the broader listing venues, with 1,551 coins recorded by CoinGecko on August 4, 2026.
Counts vary widely between sources because each one measures coins, pairs and delisted assets differently.

How do I transfer crypto from Gate to another exchange?
Verify the destination account, close open positions, then send a small test transfer before moving the balance.
Confirm the network matches on both sides and include any required memo or tag.

Do Gate alternatives require KYC?
Yes, every major centralised exchange in this comparison required identity verification by 2026.
Verification tiers and limits differ, so check the specific tier you need before depositing.

Risk and Regional Disclosure

Crypto trading carries substantial risk, including the total loss of your capital, and leverage magnifies that risk in both directions.
Fee rates, listing counts and licensing status in this article were verified on August 4, 2026 and change frequently, so confirm current figures on each platform's own fee page before acting.
Readers in the United States and the United Kingdom should use an exchange licensed in their own jurisdiction, since MEXC does not serve either market.
Readers in the European Economic Area should use a MiCA-authorised crypto-asset service provider, and MEXC is not authorised under MiCA.
Nothing here is investment advice or a recommendation about which platform you may lawfully use.
