Bitcoin Sell-Off Led by Mid-Cycle Wallets While Long-Term Whales Hold Firm: VanEck

VanEck says bitcoin’s downturn is being driven by mid-cycle wallets while the oldest holders keep accumulating, with futures data showing washed-out market conditions.

What to know:

  • Asset manager VanEck says mid-cycle holders who last moved coins within five years are driving bitcoin’s latest sell-off.
  • The firm says long-term holders remain steady while open interest and funding levels point to reset futures positioning.
  • Other analysts cite OG selling, October deleveraging and offshore trading volatility as additional pressures on bitcoin.

Bitcoin’s latest sell-off is being driven by mid-cycle holders rather than long-term whales, according to VanEck’s "Mid-November 2025 Bitcoin ChainCheck" report.

The asset management firm said wallets whose coins last moved within the past five years account for most of the recent selling, while the oldest cohorts have remained “remarkably steady” despite weakening sentiment. VanEck also noted that coins that were last moved more than five years ago continue aging into the cohort, adding roughly +278,000 BTC over the past two years, which the firm said signals that long-term conviction remains intact.

The report lands as bitcoin trades near multi-month lows. BTC was recently around $86,696 at 9:15 p.m. UTC on Thursday, down 3.2% over the past 24 hours and 31.2% below its Oct. 6 all-time high of $126,080, according to CoinGecko. Analysts have tied the broader decline to forced liquidations, long-term holder distribution and heightened volatility across offshore derivatives markets.

“There have been several catalysts, but it seems as if the biggest drivers are long-term selling by ‘OGs’, an uncertain economic climate, and a mass deleveraging event on the 10th October,” Nic Puckrin, CEO of Coin Bureau, told Euronews. He said older, large-balance holders “have been selling for several weeks,” creating “a flood of supply hitting the market.”

Carol Alexander, a finance professor at the University of Sussex, told Euronews that bitcoin’s swings also reflect aggressive trading behavior on offshore platforms. She said professional trading firms deploy order-book strategies “labelled spoofing or laddering,” adding that such firms “care only that [the price] moves quickly.”

VanEck said the 3–5 year age band has fallen 32% over the past two years as those coins changed addresses, a trend the firm links to turnover among cycle traders rather than capitulation by decade-long holders.

The report also highlighted a reset in speculative positioning: open interest in bitcoin perpetuals has dropped 20% in BTC terms and 32% in USD terms since Oct. 9, pushing funding rates to levels similar to past washed-out periods. Smaller wallets holding 100–1,000 BTC have increased balances 9% in six months and 23% in a year as the largest whale cohort trimmed positions.

VanEck said the combination of long-term holder stability, cohort rotation and futures-market capitulation leaves bitcoin in a “reset” state that has historically preceded tactical rebounds.

Fed forecasts only one rate cut in 2026, a more conservative outlook than expected

The post Fed forecasts only one rate cut in 2026, a more conservative outlook than expected appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell talks to reporters following the regular Federal Open Market Committee meetings at the Fed on July 30, 2025 in Washington, DC. Chip Somodevilla | Getty Images The Federal Reserve is projecting only one rate cut in 2026, fewer than expected, according to its median projection. The central bank’s so-called dot plot, which shows 19 individual members’ expectations anonymously, indicated a median estimate of 3.4% for the federal funds rate at the end of 2026. That compares to a median estimate of 3.6% for the end of this year following two expected cuts on top of Wednesday’s reduction. A single quarter-point reduction next year is significantly more conservative than current market pricing. Traders are currently pricing in at two to three more rate cuts next year, according to the CME Group’s FedWatch tool, updated shortly after the decision. The gauge uses prices on 30-day fed funds futures contracts to determine market-implied odds for rate moves. Here are the Fed’s latest targets from 19 FOMC members, both voters and nonvoters: Zoom In IconArrows pointing outwards The forecasts, however, showed a large difference of opinion with two voting members seeing as many as four cuts. Three officials penciled in three rate reductions next year. “Next year’s dot plot is a mosaic of different perspectives and is an accurate reflection of a confusing economic outlook, muddied by labor supply shifts, data measurement concerns, and government policy upheaval and uncertainty,” said Seema Shah, chief global strategist at Principal Asset Management. The central bank has two policy meetings left for the year, one in October and one in December. Economic projections from the Fed saw slightly faster economic growth in 2026 than was projected in June, while the outlook for inflation was updated modestly higher for next year. There’s a lot of uncertainty…

XRP Price Prediction: Targeting $2.70-$3.15 Recovery by Year-End Despite Current Bearish Momentum

The post XRP Price Prediction: Targeting $2.70-$3.15 Recovery by Year-End Despite Current Bearish Momentum appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. Jessie A Ellis Nov 19, 2025 15:09 XRP price prediction points to potential $2.70-$3.15 targets within 4-6 weeks, though current RSI at 38.42 and bearish MACD suggest near-term consolidation around $2.07-$2.19. Ripple’s XRP faces a critical juncture as technical indicators paint a mixed picture for the digital asset’s near-term trajectory. Despite recent bearish momentum, our XRP price prediction analysis suggests potential upside targets remain achievable before year-end. XRP Price Prediction Summary • XRP short-term target (1 week): $2.19 (+2.3%) – aligning with CoinLore’s technical forecast • Ripple medium-term forecast (1 month): $2.35-$2.70 range based on analyst consensus • Key level to break for bullish continuation: $2.58 (immediate resistance) • Critical support if bearish: $2.07 (immediate support) with $1.25 as strong support Recent Ripple Price Predictions from Analysts The latest Ripple forecast from multiple sources shows remarkable convergence around the $2.35-$2.70 range. Blockchain.News presents the most optimistic XRP price prediction with targets of $2.70-$3.15, citing oversold conditions and regulatory optimism as key drivers. This bullish outlook contrasts with the more conservative Benzinga forecast of $2.35 by year-end, which factors in XRP’s cross-border payment utility. CoinLore’s short-term XRP price target of $2.19 appears most realistic given current technical conditions, representing a modest 2.3% upside from current levels. The consensus among analysts suggests medium confidence in these predictions, with no extreme bullish or bearish outliers. XRP Technical Analysis: Setting Up for Consolidation Before Breakout Current Ripple technical analysis reveals XRP trading near oversold territory with an RSI of 38.42, suggesting potential for a bounce. However, the MACD histogram at -0.0110 indicates persistent bearish momentum that must be overcome for any sustained rally. XRP’s position at 0.13 within the Bollinger Bands places it near the lower band support at $2.08, historically a level where buying interest…
