KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) has urged tour bus operators and tourism associations that have yet to submit diesel usage data and related documents to do so immediately, to enable the government to assess appropriate forms of assistance following the rise in diesel price.

In a statement today, Motac said the data is crucial for the government to accurately evaluate the increase in operating costs borne by operators to determine the suitable form and rate of tax incentives.

According to Motac, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) has in principle agreed to consider proposals for assistance to tour bus operators, but the decision must be supported by complete and accurate data.

“Motac has requested the relevant associations and operators to submit diesel usage data, as well as comparisons of fuel costs before and after the Middle East crisis. However, to date, the required information and documents have yet to be received,” it said.

The ministry said it has taken note of a memorandum submitted by nine tourism associations regarding the diesel price hike impact on tour bus operations, and has since held engagement sessions with representatives of the associations to obtain direct feedback from industry players on the challenges faced.

The ministry stressed that any form of assistance cannot be decided without a clear picture of the industry’s actual situation, as it may not reflect the real needs of operators and could lead to dissatisfaction among industry players.

“Motac once again calls on all associations and operators that have yet to submit the required information and documents to do so promptly, to enable the government to expedite the evaluation process and implement assistance measures that are truly targeted, fair and effective,” it said.

Motac added that it would continue to prioritise the sustainability of the tourism industry and the well-being of the people, with follow-up measures to be implemented in stages after a comprehensive assessment that takes into account the country’s fiscal position and sustainable economic growth. — Bernama
