A few years ago I had a simple way of analyzing the market. If Bitcoin was going up, I assumed everything was fine. Green candles meant confidence, headlines were optimistic, and social media suddenly became a place where everyone looked like a trading genius.

Looking back, it was an easy way to ignore what actually mattered.

The funny thing about crypto is that the most dangerous moments rarely feel dangerous. They usually feel comfortable. Volatility fades, every dip gets bought, and people slowly stop thinking about risk. That’s exactly why a recent analysis from AMBCrypto made me pause.

The report points out that leverage across the crypto market continues to climb while spot demand remains relatively weak. More traders are using borrowed capital to increase exposure, but there isn’t the same level of fresh money entering the market. Price may continue moving higher, yet the foundation supporting that move becomes increasingly dependent on leverage rather than genuine buying interest.

What Happens Beneath the Surface

At first, this sounded like another technical metric that only derivatives traders would care about. Then I realized we’ve seen this movie before.

Markets don’t usually collapse because everyone suddenly changes their mind. They become fragile first. Open interest grows, positions become crowded, and a relatively small price move is enough to trigger forced liquidations that accelerate in both directions.

I like thinking of it as walking across a frozen lake. Everything looks solid, people are relaxed, and nothing appears wrong. But underneath the surface, tiny cracks are already spreading. You don’t know exactly when the ice will give way, but every additional step increases the pressure.

Crypto often behaves the same way. A rally driven by strong spot demand is very different from one supported mostly by leverage, even if the charts look identical.

Why I’m Paying Attention

None of this means a correction is inevitable. Bitcoin has repeatedly surprised skeptics and continued climbing when everyone expected a reversal. The market can stay stronger for much longer than most people imagine.

Still, this analysis is a useful reminder that price isn’t the whole story.

Most of us spend hours searching for the perfect entry point while barely looking at what is happening underneath the surface. We watch candles, moving averages, and resistance levels but forget to ask a much simpler question: who is actually buying?

If real demand starts catching up, the current rally could have plenty of room left. But if leverage keeps growing much faster than participation, the market may be building hidden risks that won’t become obvious until volatility returns.

Sometimes the loudest signal is a green candle. And sometimes the more important one is the quiet metric almost nobody is watching.
