The UK government has enforced an immediate moratorium on cryptocurrency funding to political parties. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the decision in the House of Commons on Wednesday. The action follows an independent review into foreign financial interference in British politics.

Government Halts Crypto Donations Over Security Risks

Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed the ban after receiving the Rycroft Review. He said the measure protects democratic processes from hidden foreign influence. The government will amend the Representation of the People Bill to enforce the moratorium.

Communities Secretary Steve Reed told lawmakers the rules apply from Wednesday onward. He said parties must return any crypto received within 30 days once legislation passes. He added that criminal penalties will apply after the deadline expires.

Philip Rycroft led the 50-page review commissioned in December 2025. He wrote that crypto assets present tracing challenges and regulatory gaps. He stated, “I was here to look out for the interest of our democratic processes.”

Rycroft explained that donations under £500 escape standard permissibility checks. He warned that AI tools can split larger sums into smaller transfers. He said regulators cannot track ultimate ownership in some crypto vehicles.

The review found no crypto donation has reached the formal reporting threshold. As a result, the Electoral Commission lacks visibility into crypto funding levels. Rycroft described the moratorium as a pause rather than a permanent ban.

Crypto Donations Face Stricter Oversight and Caps

The legislation includes a mechanism to lift the moratorium later. Parliament and the Electoral Commission must confirm adequate regulatory safeguards first. Rycroft wrote that future crypto donations could operate under tight supervision.

He said donors may still convert digital assets into fiat currency. Traditional anti-money laundering checks will then apply to those funds. The Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy supported the review’s findings.

The committee recently called crypto in politics an unacceptable risk. It urged the government to impose an immediate moratorium. Lawmakers had considered restrictions on crypto donations since December 2025.

The policy directly affects Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage. Reform became the first major UK party to accept Bitcoin in May 2025. Thailand-based investor Christopher Harborne donated £12 million to the party over one year.

Harborne made a single £9 million contribution within that total. The Electoral Commission said Reform has not shared crypto wallet addresses. This limited the regulator’s ability to verify funding sources.

Reform UK MPs left the chamber during Starmer’s announcement. Starmer criticized Farage during the session. He said one party leader would “say anything, no matter how divisive, if he is paid to do so.”

The review also addressed wider foreign interference concerns. It cited threats from Russia, China, and Iran as persistent. The inquiry followed the November 2025 conviction of former Reform Wales leader Nathan Gill.

Gill received more than 10 years in prison for accepting Russian bribes. The government also introduced a £100,000 annual cap on overseas donations. These measures take effect as Parliament debates the amended bill.
