For years, the conversation about education and technology in Africa was almost entirely about access. Getting students online, putting classrooms on the web, and building alternatives to the old systems.

That conversation has now evolved.

In the emerging EdTech industry landscape in Nigeria, there is a shift in goal from providing digital education to creating intelligent education systems driven by data, AI, automation, and cloud-based systems.

Initiatives such as curriculum-aligned learning programmes for mobile learning, which function in even low connectivity settings, are now being championed by African-based founders like Sim Shagaya in order to speed up the mobile-first learning trend in Africa. Honey Ogundeyi took personalized learning one step further by bringing on-demand teacher support and personalized learning experiences through digital learning into the equation, and Adewale Yusuf presented an alternative approach to education based on the development of practical digital skills and employability.

These companies worked together to reinvent education in a technologically driven world.

The current transformation, however, is one that happens behind the scenes and is reshaping the future of learning and the emergence of data analytics as one of the main decision-making tools used in education.

Going digital was only the first step for these schools. Now, they have to prove they can understand student behavior and measure learning progress instantly. They are also tasked with cleaning up inefficient operations and personalizing the experience for every student, all while building a system that can handle long-term growth.

This transition has opened the door for a new wave of tech talents, such as Analysts, cloud strategists, and digital transformation experts, who are now the ones working behind the curtain, helping schools move past just collecting data to actually making smart decisions with it.

Industry experts like Somtochukwu Uzodufa are highlighting the significance of data storytelling and strategic insights, while Maduka Esther remains active in socially inspired innovations, engaging in analytics and digital learning projects. Alatise Michael and other analysts are also assisting institutions to apply data-driven strategies to the current learning environment.

The growing demand for this expertise reflects a broader industry realization: modern education systems cannot scale effectively without intelligence infrastructure.
That is where professionals like Festus Irenesale fit into the larger picture.

With a background spanning business strategy, cloud computing, project management, and business intelligence, the UK-based Data Analyst represents a new category of technology professional emerging within Africa’s education sector focused not only on deploying technology, but on helping institutions make smarter operational decisions through analytics.

Originally trained in Banking and Finance at the University of Benin, his transition into technology consulting was shaped by repeated exposure to organizations struggling with fragmented systems, delayed reporting structures, and inefficient administrative operations.

In many institutions, technology existed, but actionable insight did not. Reports were often manually generated. Operational bottlenecks remained hidden for months. Decision-makers lacked real-time visibility into performance metrics, student engagement trends, and resource allocation.

With the acceleration of digital transformation across the world, these disparities were hard for institutions to overlook.

That challenge was prominently revealed in a project implementing cloud-based Learning Management System for over 3,000 students. Administrative strain, communication fragmentation, and restricted access to digital learning experiences were emerging challenges for the institution. The project enabled a 40% reduction in administrative burden, enhanced operational visibility, and increased student engagement through a combination of cloud infrastructure and centralized reporting and analytics.

The results reflected a larger picture taking place throughout the sector.

Schools are turning around to realize that digital transformation is not just about buying software or implementing online learning platforms. The true competitive edge now is the ability to gather, analyze and use data effectively.

But, says Irenesale, “technology is not a magic bullet for institutional issues.” “What becomes valuable is the ability to continuously create insights and inform decision making through building systems.”

It’s a philosophy that has been growing more prevalent in the global EdTech space.
Data is now increasingly a key part of the way educational institutions work, from predictive analytics to AI-driven learning systems, and from cloud-based reporting systems to data management. Nowadays, institutions use analytics to track performance, but they also use it for predicting student behavior, optimizing their operational costs, enhancing their student retention, and tailoring learning processes.

Industry analysts think this next wave of educational innovation will rely on the technology, strategy, and organizational leadership bridge builders.

It is a trend that is happening in the education industry, and across the board, there is an increasing need for skills in Power BI, SQL, cloud computing, automation and business intelligence.Beyond technical implementation, the role increasingly requires strategic thinking, helping institutions understand not just what technology to adopt, but why adoption matters and how systems can scale sustainably over time.

That growing influence has also brought wider recognition to professionals working within the data and educational transformation space. In 2024, Irenesale received the Emerging EdTech Strategy Excellence Award at the Titans of Tech Awards, recognizing contributions toward technology-driven innovation within education.

The recognition reflects a broader industry trend: the future of educational innovation may depend just as much on intelligence systems and analytics strategy as it does on the platforms students interact with directly.

As Nigeria’s EdTech ecosystem continues to mature, the sector is becoming increasingly interconnected.

Founders are building scalable platforms. Analysts are creating intelligence systems. Cloud specialists are modernizing infrastructure. Consultants are redesigning institutional operations. Together, they are shaping an educational ecosystem that is becoming smarter, faster, and more adaptive.

And while the platforms themselves often dominate public attention, the professionals helping institutions understand and operationalize data may ultimately become some of the most important architects of modern education.
